Border documents are a separate check set by the CBSA and CBP, not by the casino.

Step 1 · The bridge

The Canadian end of the bridge

The casino on the Canadian end of the bridge is Gateway Casinos Sault Ste. Marie, at 30 Bay St. The full address ends with Ontario P6A 7A6. It stands near the International Bridge, which links this city with its Michigan namesake in the United States. Gateway puts it near the U.S. border, at the eastern tip of Lake Superior.

OLG Casino Sault Ste. Marie was the name on the door when it first opened on May 19, 1999. Gateway Casinos & Entertainment took over the operation on May 29, 2017. Parking on site is free, so the car question is an easy one. Before you head over, the phone line is 705-759-0100.

Step 2 · Two checks

Two checks, two sets of rules

The border and the casino door are two separate checks. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) sets the rules for entering Canada. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sets them for entering the United States. This guide does not list border documents and does not estimate crossing times. Check both agencies' own pages before you leave.

You must be 19 or over to get in, and you'll need current photo identification issued by a government. Anyone 21 or under must bring an additional document showing their name. If you are self-excluded or trespassed, whether by this casino or by any gaming site in Ontario, you won't be let in. Use the slider tool above for a step-by-step walkthrough.

What to Bring to Gateway Casinos

Step 3 · The hours

How late the night runs

From Sunday through Thursday, doors open at 9 am and the casino shuts at 2 am. Friday and Saturday hours run later, 9 am until 3 am. All times are local Ontario time (Eastern Time). Closing at 2 am means the night runs past midnight into the next day, so a Tuesday evening wraps up on Wednesday morning.

Live table hours are unpublished, and so are holiday hours. Before a holiday visit, call 705-759-0100 to check. Pick an hour in the wheel tool below and it shows you what is open then.

Step 4 · Supper and the floor

Supper first, then the floor

Open daily, Getaway serves as the casino's restaurant and bar and holds a full liquor licence. Breakfast is offered from 9:30 am to 11 am, after which the main menu applies from 11 am to 9 pm. The choices lean toward light meals, snacks and drinks, and quick ready-to-go food can be picked up at the bar.

Slot stakes on the floor start with penny games and go up to $5.00 machines. The selection includes video slots, stepper (reel) slots and keno. In the Electronic Table Games Lounge, every player has their own screen and sets their own pace. Dealer-run live tables are also available, though how many there are is not published. The list includes no poker room.

Step 5 · Money

Cash on the Canadian side

The casino lists currency exchange, bank machines (ABMs) and lottery on site. This guide gives no exchange rates, so ask on site before you change money.

Signing up for My Club Rewards, the casino's players card, costs nothing: just bring valid ID to Guest Services. Points accumulate on both slots and table games. Since the house holds an edge in every casino game, players taken all together lose more than they win as time goes on. Setting a spending limit ahead of the evening, and leaving the bank card at home, is a common way to stay within budget.

Step 6 · The way home

The route in

From the Michigan side, the route tool opens Google Maps directions from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to the casino. It prints no distance for the Michigan side, since the guide's map data covers Ontario towns only.

For Ontario towns, it gives straight-line distances: Bruce Mines 49 km, Blind River 113 km and Elliot Lake 130 km. Wawa sits 167 km to the north, Sudbury 257 km to the east and Thunder Bay 425 km to the north-west. Roads are longer than these lines. Once you arrive, on-site parking is free. The casino has no hotel, so plan the end of the night before you set out.

Online

Online rules on the Ontario side

Ontario's regulated online casino market is open only to players aged 19 or older who are physically inside Ontario. Private sites need registration with the AGCO, which is the regulator, and must hold an agreement to operate with iGaming Ontario (iGO). iGO publishes a directory of authorized sites. The government's own online casino is OLG.ca. Any site accepting Ontario players without AGCO registration operates illegally in the province.

Every Ad link here takes you to one online casino partner, a private firm paying the guide a commission. It runs as a separate business, not the Bay Street casino, not Gateway Casinos and not OLG. It may be replaced over time. You can look up any site in the iGO directory, this partner too.
